Gig ?! How and Why?

When it getting too much, let it sustain, and the rest will speak. All my body and my mind will focus toward just one dimension. Its the whole community that bring between the headache and high sugar. And what lies beneath both of the feeling is dellusion. Critisizing is the part of the solution and the other part will be the real action. Oh my, oh well.

So lets get this straight to the ass. I notice some of the things that should not happen for a good reason and for the real cause. Coz punk rock is a counter culture. Its shouldnt be chaos and broken, its about critical thinking, a common sense. Oh yeah! Thats should be the best word to describe it!.

We talk about an autonomous space first that always relate to gig organizing! I start a journey to one of the most famous venue lately. Why famous? Because I guess the space is quite big and because one of the memorable punk band used to play there and people start to organize gig down there. It is huge, with food stall and good space for people to hang up, talk, laugh, some already getting bored. Things ruin. Why? I might say that the location of the place is at where all this organize crime can be found. Police bribe, cheaters, rat, asshole, Chow Kit road. And it all created, controlled and served by the system.

There is a big banner state "INDIE BANDS" along with other entertainment serve such as KARAOKE, bla bla. Its more like a signboard. But its not really a space belong to someone who support an indie scene or other crap. They just used the indie name for their fucking bussiness. Thats why there will be a tough guy macho asshole who will ask you for RM 20 space rent if you sell distro stuff while there is no sign "pay RM 20 to open your stall here".The place have this controlled sorrounding. They used the place for bussiness purpose. Bussiness is ok! But this is more like a gangster, police controlled kind of people who own the places. Funny how punk/hardcore can relate with this kind of shit. You can see it in front of you own eyes. One story end. Here come another one.

I heard about the places rental is around RM1200 and it will be not included good specs equipment, just a PA and normal non-tube amplifier and drums. Good deal, for a medium scale gig that can fit more than 500 peoples inside. Other venue like noisy, cloth and cleth or paul's place will be much more cheaper but have a very limited space for a bigger audience. Dare I say that One Cafe (I retreive the name now!), is only suitable for a large audience show. While other venue suitable for smaller scale audience. Period!

The things that we have to look upon regarding to this matter is an ability of the show to attract people and making it fair for the organizer, "people who pay the ticket to see bands" and the bands who play. And I heard some of the hardcore bands start to demand a payment for a show. Let say RM 500 per show, without count how many peoples will come to the show.Demanding hardcore bands that ask for RM 500 for one show is totally bullshit. Its unfair for the organizer. We have to look upon the community first, give it a fair room for everybody to breath and having a fair evaluation toward what the scene is struggling for. Its not money that count. Its the community and how we can put it on hold forever.

The other things, dont ask for that sum of money if you cant serve a good sound for your band. Yeah, music always have a diversity, each bands have their own styles. We talk about sound deliverance. An amplifier you are using and the equipment you are using to deliver a good sound. Ok! let say if your band ask for RM 500 for one show and you guys still using the same equipment like other bands that play the same show, and having worse sound than other bands that play for free, then go to hell. Unless you bring ur own JCM, orange or other good tube amplifier to the show and give the whole spectrum of good music and showmanship, then it might be put into consideration. But, most of the local bands will not be that way. They just put a value upon themselves with stupid music and stupid sound. Thats funny for me. All this stupid demanding bands that only sell less than 1000 copies of their CD relases can go fuck off. Aus Rotten sell more than 10,000 of their ep never demands a shit from the organizer, than you can just back off. That attitude belong to mainstream for god sake.

Once i used to organize two big show that have more than 400 person attend. The deal is simple. I got let say RM 2000 profit. And 6 bands played let say. So the profit will be divide to 7 part, including the organizer (me!). So each band will get around +/- RM 280. Including the organizer wil get the same amount. So let say if there is a touring bands that need more money for the sake of tour needed, then make it like 30% to the tour bands and the rest share it equally depends on the bands coming from far away cities or nearby cities. Hardcore punk should not having this double standard things regarding playing show. Its simply bullshit and narrowing the path of making a good and healthy scene.

Dont compare us with the european or the states scene that will have a bands got paid in very good amount of money. They (the scene) have larger audience and people who support each other, buy records, and support the bands that came for tour. They keep the label alive and label have money to pay the bands equally and the scene is strong enough. They care about music and people bought music coz they still care about the impact. Merchandise like shirt or napkin or sock (ha ha) is cool too, but dont rely too much on that shit coz it means fashion than idea and music. Music is soul, fashion is just a physical nothingness. So support the local community and scene first then you can see things getting brighter.

Oh this is the story during all my experience went to one cafe for several gigs organized down there. Ticket prices should have to be in a sensible amount. Must be logic for the bands who played and dont make profit because we are just in the beginning of the making things good. We charge fucked up prices to the kids, and people start to see all this shit is crazy, then kids will not coming again to see the hardcore show. Dont cheat us with ridicalous ticket prices while provide a lame ass equipment for the bands to play. Please be reasonable and logic.

Got a news from Uri of Ghaust and he told me that the recording for the split had already done and Brian of Aseethe do informed that they will hit the studio soon for Aseethe tracks and the theme will be called "the armada". Rad! Hopefully the records will come out before mid 2010 and it will be done in beautiful digipack packaging and the artwork done by brian of Aseethe.

End of 2009. - some thought

Every year, at the end of it, people counting. And hoping for a new beginning for the next number. I'm still riding within the scene tho had lost track awhile from the community. The pace still remain the same. And what excite me the most, was the growing numbers of good bands day by day from all around the world.
Or maybe its not the period that count but my discovery getting wider.

The downfall of CD's selling impact the local scene so much. The past trade that was so smooth and solid, become slower now. The vinyl takeover was somehow good to challenge the dull mp3 culture, it make people more appreciate the music, looking forward for a good sound output. But here in Asian, there is only four options for music.
1. Tapes 2. Compact Disc 3. Radio show 4. MP3

The first option will be the best. Although some kids here keep making excuse of not having a tape player. Walkman are fucking cheap compare to your PC speaker. And trust me, it sound better than your average MP3. And am I giving up. Im gonna start selling walkmen in 2010.. Its cost less than RM 50 and I will search for a first hand and second hand. Starting my profession as an electronic salesman now! ha ha

Second option is a solid option to make the worldwide distribution alive, to spread music from many region across the world and sell it with best prices, based on the living status down here. The worldwide scene don't care anymore about CD. They hate mp3 and they hate CD's too. But this will be the downfall for the kids down here. How many peoples here have a possibilities to listen to many good bands, to name few imperial leather, face down in shit, dropdead, bla bla if label like havoc records, profane existence, yellow dog etc dont accept trade? When label trade CD's with CD's, it sound equal without limitation. Without being choosy of what's hot whats not, and supporting each other. That's punk rock. This option will offer a room of communication between the people. This is the best option for organizing the local scene and community. It need a lot of passion and support.

The third option, radio? hell no there is no radio show down here. Start something if you like broadcasting. Watch "The Boat That Rock" Movie and get inspired by it. Hell it great to do your own radio station. Malaysia local radio show suck! Start your own

The last option. Its digital, fast, accessible but with less feeling. Some people involved in the scene because of the punk idea, the music, the philosophy of it. And by the way, its a community. It should be the community. Label have to survive, bands should survive, the kids will have something to react upon any substance of inspiration. So start supporting each other. Artists, collective, movement, bands, labels, poet, diy gardener, DIY restaurant, show organizer, home brew seller, and so many more. They deserve a support. To keep the scene alive. MP3 ruins. It smash the mainstream culture. But it ruin the whole concept of supporting each other.
For me, running this label doesnt call me for a bigger audience. I still have few people that still listening to record and buying something from me. And most of them are my good friends. this is not a pledge of alliance or any sort of sympathy statement, but you look at labels like alternative tentacles, no idea records, havoc records, yellow dog records, alerta antifascista and many more. They are there and keeping the scene alive. So, dont blame the sceneif it is dull with the same monotonous bands that keep playing typical things and dont widespread and burst out the mind and keep thinking to create a new things. It seem that we dont care. And by the way, Its hard to sell passion, its easy to sell fashion.

And looking at the whole scenario, its time to reshape the feelings of the lost soul.

Until this moment, I never knew there was a screamo scene in Malaysia.After a bit of internet research, my ignorance has been completely exposed.Not only are there a fair amount of Malaysian screamo bands, a lot of it is quiet good.Take KIAS FANSURI, for example.Featuring ex-member of UTARID ( another band I was unfamiliar with until now), they play in a style that should make fans of SHIKARI , FUNERAL DINER or NEIL PERRY feel right at home. Most of the lyrics are in English, with obscure titles such as "Would You Like To Taste My Homemade Morgue?" and "Love Lost Butterscotch" , while one is in their native Malay.This CD collects their first two years of releases, including a demo tape, a comp track, a four-way split 10", a split 7" and, strangest of all, a split 3.5" floppy disk. Aseethe is a trio from Iowa. The spectrum of their music capture the whole dark atmosphere and this is no way a crappy noise stuff. They will soon put out a full length "Iron Mountain" under Scenester Credentials Records. And cactus records will release their split CD with Ghaust and expected to out on January 2010. Check out this cool band.

1. Can you please introduce the band. A little bit history of the band? And whose play what?

Aseethe is myself Brian Barr (Guitar, Keys), Drew Bissell (Bass, Keys) and Eric Diercks (Drums, Noise). Started in 2007 as a solo project, I added Eric and Drew to the line up last Summer. Eric did play drums on the Mauul Split because at the time I was not happy with my drum programming capabilities. I did a few tours, one with Empires, and two with Shores of the Tundra. But I still felt that the songs didn't translate as well live as they did on record. So I asked Eric to play drums when I was moving back to Iowa from San Francisco. We practiced most of the summer trying to play to a click track with the computer backing up everything else, but it seemed to mechanical. So we asked Drew, who we had both played in other bands before to join. The laptop has been worked out of the band, and currently we are only playing new material that we all wrote together. There are talks of playing Fire to Flames live but we will see.

2. What will be the main influence of the band (musician, artist, band, books, movies etc)? And do you guys mind telling us the philosophy of the band as well as the music direction Aseethe that maybe reflecting upon your life and the culture where you living?

It's hard to pinpoint influences because there are so many. We are definitely a hardcore band, rooted in the DIY punk scene. With that being said, we definitely believe in the ethics associated with the scene. We book our own tours and if we didn't have a label to help us we would self release the records ourselves. Every member of Aseethe has booked a show for another band or ran a show space from time to time, so we are involved.

As for sound we are also into everything from country and blues to noise and drone, so it's hard pinpoint a specific influence there. We like it slow, dark and heavy. When writing the motto is "that's part is great, but what if we make it slower".

3. Share with us a little bit experience of the previous recording process of the band? And is there any new things been explored and progression of the recent recording?

The Aseethe/ Mauul split was just me with the skeletal version of the song. I went into Flat Black here in Iowa City. Luke was really open to what I was trying to do and really helped with the writing and recording process. That record wouldn't have sounded the way it did if it wasn't for him.

The Shores of the Tundra release was done mostly at home in my studio apartment when I lived in San Francisco. My friend Jordan who needed a project for school recorded my guitars and mixed everything. I wasn't really envolved in the mixing process, but he did a great job.

The Iron Mountain full length which is what we are working on now is a little more fragmented, but we are taking our time and leaving plenty of time for self reflection. That is only due to the fact that both Drew and I have recording equipment ourselves. We went into Flat Black again and did all the basic tracking, plus added layers to one of the songs. Once again Luke provided a great outlet for us to experiment, and brought ideas to the table as well. That was in October, and we just spent the last 2 months tracking keyboards in the comfort of our own homes. Lastly we are heading to Chicago to do the final mixing with our friend Greg from the band Plague Bringer. What makes this experience different from all the rest is that it's a group effort and not just me and one other person. Iron Mountain will be a much more diverse record then the last 2 releases.

4. Do you think that the DIY/Independent music is the best channel for spreading out your music? Any thought of using other channel to spread your music in the future? Do you have certain kind of ethic regarding playing show, and also releasing/distributing the music material of the band?

Yes, and I believe I covered a lot of this in my previous answer. I will add that I(we) don't believe in shoving our music down peoples throats. We try to use the internet sparingly when it comes to spreading our music. No other channels have been explored since we are all kind of luddites to some degree. We would much rather have our music spread via word of mouth or seeing us play a show. The band is a little more selective these days when it comes to playing out live. We don't like playing our home town(s) 4 times a month like other bands.

5. Any plan to tour somewhere in the future?

We have a Southern tour coming up in January, with a West Coast tour later in the year. We were going to go to Europe but decided to wait a little longer. Plans to tour Asia, New Zealand and Australia have been talked about, but nothing solid yet. It will happen sooner or later.

6. Add anything you want regarding the latest release, or anything else you would like to add.

Interview with Ghaust!

*They are two piece band from South Jakarta, Bandung. Ghaust without a doubt is one of the great act from the Asian region. The improvisation of the sound range from metal, post rock, hardcore etc been combine together in perfect blend. Their last full length CD release under Purbaharuan recordings (CD) and third arm records (tape), was superbly recorded and among the best releases in 2008. Soon cactus will release a split CD with Aseethe (drone/doom/noise band from USA). This is a brief introduction of them.

1. Can you please introduce the band. A little bit history of the band? And whose play what?
We're Ghaust an instrumental two-piece from Jakarta, Indonesia. My name is Uri A. Putra and i play guitar and my good friend M. Edwards plays the drums. We've been playing together since around August 2005, and have released one full lenght album so far.

2. What will be the main influence of the band (musician, artist, band, books, movies etc)? And do you guys mind telling us the philosophy of the band as well as the music direction Ghaust that maybe reflecting upon your life and the culture where you living?
When we all met up for the first time, we truly understood how diverse we were with our music tastes. One day we would be listening to hardcore/punk music, then post rock, and then some doom metal or black metal music. We really couldn't pinpoint any influences as a band. Personally, i think Corrupted would be a major influence for us.
For us, our songs are more like journey of emotions. We suppose different people will feel different vibes and interpret things in different ways. Our sound reflects what we're trying to say, the heavier parts mostly explain the anger in the concept and the more ambience parts are the opposite.

3. Share with us a little bit experience of the previous recording process of the band? And is there any new things been explored and progression of the recent recording?
There wasn't so much new experience we can share about our last recording.. On the guitar and bass part we were doing the same recording tehnique like before, but only we used a much better equipment. oh and, i guess we did some experiments on the drum, especially on the miking. It takes a lot of time but we think we satisfied with the result.

4. Do you think that the DIY/Independent music is the best channel for spreading out your music? Any thought of using other channel to spread your music in the future? Do you have certain kind of ethic regarding playing show, and also releasing/distributing the music material of the band?
Yes, we think DIY is the best way on spreading our music.
No.
And about the ethic thingy, we dont think we have it.. but we prefer to play at the small gig or show. it has more intense feelings and we surely enjoy it.

5. Any plan to tour somewhere in the future?
We still dont have any plan about touring since we are kinda busy right now.
